The Congo Nile Trail Hike

The Congo Nile Trail is one of Rwanda's most scenic adventure routes. It stretches 227 kilometers along the shores of Lake Kivu, passing through hills, forests, and villages. The trail offers a mix of adventure, cultural experiences, and breathtaking landscapes. Travelers can explore it by hiking, cycling, driving or boating. The entire trail can take between 8-9 days depending on pace, but guests can choose stages to make with most of visitors doing the Gisenyi-Kibuye distance of 74Km in 4 days. Rubavu (Gisenyi): The Starting Point Rubavu sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. The town offers sandy beaches, hot springs, and lively markets. Visitors can relax by the lake, visit local craft shops, or take boat rides to nearby islands. Karongi: The Heart of the Trail Karongi is known for its peaceful lake views and coffee plantations. A boat trip on Lake Kivu reveals small islands, including Napoleon Island, home to a colony of fruit bats. Coffee lovers can visit farms to see how Rwanda produces some of the world’s best coffee. Nyamasheke & Rusizi: The Final Sections The southern part of the trail offers breathtaking views of Nyungwe Forest National Park, home to chimpanzees and diverse birdlife. Villages along the route provide an authentic experience of Rwandan life. Rusizi, the final stop, offers stunning sunsets over Lake Kivu and views of the Congo hills.

Nyungwe Impenetrable Forest, Rwanda

In this beautiful green forest – one of the oldest rainforests in Africa – rushing streams, sun-starved valleys, tree-filled mountains, dappled savannahs and extensive swamps create a home for myriad species. Nyungwe is a wonderful option for visitors wanting to see some of Rwanda’s spectacular endemics, its 13 primate species, and of course, to experience a chimpanzee trek to view one of its semi-habituated troops. Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park Rwanda is home to the Big 5 found in northeastern Rwanda, at the country's border with Tanzania. It is dominated by swamps and small lakes with flow in the wake of River Kagera. The network of water sources and unique landscape together create very spectacular scenery. It is quite a remarkable ecosystem. The park was obviously named after River Kagera that feeds various water bodies including Lake Ihema. Surrounded by cultivated hills, which are such an integral part of Rwanda's landscape, the scenery of Akagera National Park is quite simply beautiful. The landscape is low, consisting of vast plains dominated by grass, candle-like Euphorbia candelabra shrubs, and both dense and sparse forests, though it continues with the generally rugged terrain that is so characteristic of Rwanda.
